Kids Club

Join us every Saturday for the Gleebooks Kids Club with Rachel!

We’ll eat popcorn, talk about books and sometimes invite the author/illustrator to join us too! It’s a free and fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Our plans for the month ahead are posted below.

Once you have been registered you’re also entitled to 10% off all kid’s books. Our book clubs run for an hour, and will be socially distanced with lots of hand sanitizer as per our COVID-Safe plan.

Each Saturday of the month will be for a different school year group (but all ages are welcome!):

1st Saturday: Primary Year 3-4
2nd Saturday: Primary Year 5-6
3rd Saturday: Secondary Year 7-8
4th Saturday: Secondary Year 9-10

Rachel also hosts Rhyme Time every Monday at 10am – songs and rhymes best-suited for age two-and-under (though everyone is welcome) and Story Time every Friday at 10am (for ages 3-5). NB Both Rhyme Time and Story Time are on a temporary hiatus. Rachel hopes to recommence both in September 2022. Check back here for confirmation.

For more information contact Rachel at rachel@gleebooks.com.au and be sure to follow our gleebooks_kids Instagram page where Rachel will update you with any last minute schedule or venue changes.

Warm, Wintery greetings bookclubbers,

It has been a huge few weeks with bookish mischief galore at the Writers Festival and some wonderful visits from authors in-store, hope you managed to catch something exciting (other than the sniffles and coughs that are creeping around everywhere at the moment)

We have a few big sessions coming up in the next few weeks, so just recapping and confirming dates, times and books for the rest of June.

Saturday 4th June is the launch party for one of our favourite locals, Maria Speyer who is releasing a beautiful picture book based on a song she has written, which will be performed on the day by her very talented daughter. This is also perfect for our year 1/2 bookclubbers where we will be making some serious craft, acting out the story and making badges. It will be such a lovely celebration of the arts!

Saturday June 11th is a busy day for author visits and we will be kick starting it with a party for Children’s Laureate, Gabrielle Wang at 2pm. Our year 3/4 book clubbers are super lucky to have Gabrielle launching her new book Zadie Ma and the Dog Who Chased The Moon where she will be talking about writing and also doing a drawing workshop. This is a free event and all drawing materials will be supplied. At 3:30pm we also welcome author and journalist Sarah Armstrong to talk to our year 5/6 bookclubbers about her fabulous new middle grade book, Big Magic where we will be talking mystery, circus mischief and writing great stories. Both sessions go for an hour and we encourage kids to stay for the whole afternoon. There will be popcorn, cheezels and marshmallows to celebrate! If you would like to come to either or both events please RSVP:

Our year 7/8s, fresh from being obsessed with the Heartstopper series on Netflix are looking at graphic novels this month. They have chosen 3 to look at (the kids do not have to read all three) Heartstopper by Alice Oseman, The Golden Hour by Niki Smith and Stars In Their Eyes by Jessica Walton and Aska. We meet again on Saturday June 18th at 3:30pm for popcorn and lots of solving the world’s problems. Our older teens have chosen Traitor by Amanda McCrina, a book that looks at Poland and Ukraine’s turbulent history. Lots to discuss when we meet on June 18th at 4:30pm.

Our year 5/6s also have another special guest on Saturday 25th of June at 4pm when Tristan Bancks joins us to talk about his exciting new book, Cop and Robber. Our book club kids get a special early release of the book before the rest of Australia, which should arrive in time for their session next week (2 weeks before the rest of Australia!) Tristan is one of the most engaging and brilliant writers for middle grade readers and I am so very excited to have him share his wild stories with our bookclubbers. This session is to make up for not having a bookclub during the July school holidays when everyone is away. If you would like to come along to the Tristan Bancks event, please RSVP to rachel@gleebooks.com.au

We are wanting to feature more of our wonderful book clubbers in our Gleaner magazine, which comes out every couple of months. So if anyone would like to write a little review of something they are enjoying or if they want to write about an author visit we have had we would love to reward you with a book pack of books that haven’t come out yet… or alternatively, if you would like to review a book that is coming out come and see me at the next book club as we have a load of books out the back that publishers send to us to get us excited about books that are due for release.

So looking forward to seeing you at some point during the month.
Stay safe and well, happy reading.

Rachel xxx
