At the 1968 Olympics, two Black American
athletes, John Carlos and Tommie Smith,
famously stood at the podium and gave the
black power salute. Peter Norman was the
third man in the photo, standing in solidarity
with Carlos and Smith. While the photograph
of these three runners at the winners podium
is one of the most famous of the 20th
century, upon Norman’s return to Australia,
he fell into relative obscurity and his life
began a downward spiral. This biography
follows Norman’s life from his childhood
growing up in a devout Salvation Army family
in the suburbs of Melbourne, through to
becoming one of Australia’s fastest sprinters.
It tells a riveting story that gives credence to
the argument that this great sportsman was
poorly treated by his country
This book is that story.
