August 2012 - And Another Thing

I’ve been reading The Victorian Underworld by Kellow Chesney—we have a 2nd hand copy available—which makes for perfect side-by-side reading with the British crime series Whitechapel and its ghosted images that give one a sense of London’s history stalking itself. I think I’ll have to follow up Chesney’s history of the Victorian underclass with Owen Jones’ newly updated book Chavs: The Demonisation of the Working Class—reading the Chesney I have a sense that, in different guise, the riotous and rebellious ghosts of the Victorian London slums are possibly not as tamed as the 2012 Olympic city would like to believe. By the time you read this the Olympics will be well underway—and I think I’ll be reading Perfection Point by then. What happens when no more records can be broken? And is it possible that there are still elite athletes who haven’t use performance enhancing drugs? Surely it’s just time to bring it into the open and accept the playing field. Viki
