Memories of a Lost World: Travels Through the Magic Lantern

Charlotte Fiell

Fiell, PHOTOGRAPHY, FX, 9781906863074

$63.64 ex $70.00 inc

Memories: A World Tour takes you on a fascinating journey back through time to a pre-globalised world where regional customs and national cultures were as distinctive as they were diverse. From the bustling streets of Victorian London and the ruins of ancient Egypt to the temples of Japan and the tribesmen of New Guinea, this publication explores the world through a captivating collection of over 800 magic lantern slide images. From the 1870s to the 1930s, photographic magic lantern slide shows were a popular, entertaining and educative way for people to learn about the world beyond their own shores. From Cairo and Delhi to Adelaide and Cape Town, intrepid photographers travelled to all corners of the world to document its peoples and customs. For the first time these images have been brought together in a single publication and the result is a beautiful yet poignant echo of a lost world that at the same time conveys a powerful sense of shared humanity. Memories: A World Tour is an important primary source of historical information, which precisely and beautifully documents what the world was like before the advent of television and mass-travel. Text in English, German & French.

AUTHOR: Charlotte Fiell studied at the British Institute (Florence), Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts (London) and Sotheby's Educational Studies (London). With her husband, Peter, she has written and edited over 30 internationally bestselling books on design.

Caravaggio: The Artist & His Work

Sybille Ebert-Schifferer

Getty Publications, ART, HC, 9781606060957

$90.86 ex $99.95 inc

This is a fascinating re-evaluation of the life and works of a hugely talented yet controversial artist. The young Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) created a major stir in late-sixteenth-century Rome with the groundbreaking naturalism and highly charged emotionalism of his paintings. Caravaggio is a sumptuously illustrated and engagingly written volume that takes a fresh look at Caravaggio's life and works, uncovering evidence that the efforts of Caravaggio's contemporaries to disparage his character and his artwork often sprang from their own cultural biases or a desire to promote the artistic achievements of his rivals, and that contrary to repeated claims, Caravaggio lacked neither education nor piety, but was an extremely accomplished technician who developed a successful marketing strategy.

Graphic Design: Now in Production

Andrew Blaevelt

Walker Art Center, DESIGN, PB, 9780935640984

$61.82 ex $68.00 inc

Graphic design has broadened its reach dramatically over the past decade, expanding from a specialized profession to a widely deployed skill. The rise of user-generated content, new methods of publishing and systems of distribution, and the wide dissemination of creative software have opened up new opportunities for design. More designers are becoming producers--authors, publishers, instigators and entrepreneurs--actively employing their creative skills as makers of content and shapers of experiences. Featuring work produced since 2000, Graphic Design: Now in Production explores the worlds of design-driven magazines, newspapers, books and posters; the entrepreneurial spirit of designer-produced goods; the renaissance in digital typeface design; the storytelling potential of film and television titling sequences; and the transformation of raw data into compelling information narratives. The catalogue features important original essays by leading designers that tackle themes such as the changing roles of reading and writing within the context of new technologies and self-publishing; the nature of design labor and production, from blue-collar handcraft and making to white-collar design thinking and strategy; and the impact and influence design programs and schools have had on shaping the direction of contemporary graphic design. Co-organized by Walker Art Center and Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Graphic Design: Now in Production is conceived as a visual compendium in the spirit of the Whole Earth Catalogue. It features posters, info graphics, fonts, books, magazines, film titles, logos and more, interspersed with a variety of small texts delving into specific project details, excerpted artists' statements, interviews and published manifestos, technical details, and new and old technologies and tools.

Kesu: The Art & Life of Doug Cranmer

Jennifer Kramer

Douglas & McIntyre, ART, PB, 9781553658597

$54.55 ex $60.00 inc

Although Doug Cranmer's work has been featured in many books, this is the first volume solely devoted to his art. Doug Cranmer's abstract painting series from 1974-76 is still regarded as ground-breaking in contemporary Northwest Coast modern art today. The book is a celebration of Doug Cranmer, written not as a scholarly art treatise but as he is remembered by friends, family, and the students who knew him best. Northwest Coast Kwakwaka'wakw art is renowned for its flamboyant, energetic, and colourful carving and painting. Among the best-known practitioners was Doug Cranmer, whose style was understated, elegant, fresh, and unique, and whose work quickly found an international following in the 1960s. He was an early player in the global, commercial art market and one of the first Native artists in British Columbia to own his own gallery. A long-time teacher, he inspired generations of young Native artists in Alert Bay, British Columbia, and across the province. To date, however, his considerable contributions have gone largely unrecognized.

Avedon: Murals & Portraits

Abrams, PHOTOGRAPHY, HC, 9781419705632

$109.09 ex $120.00 inc

No photographer had a more serious and deeply felt response to the political and cultural impact of the 1960s and early 1970s than Richard Avedon, whose iconic portraits of key figures of the era influenced the course of photography in the decades that followed. In four monumental photographic murals (reproduced in large gatefolds) and many related portraits, he portrayed Andy Warhol's gender-bending Factory, with Viva and Candy Darling; Abbie Hoffman and the radical agitators of the Chicago Seven; Allen Ginsberg's family, friends, and fellow artists; and the U.S. Mission Council in Saigon alongside searing portraits of victims of the Vietnam War.

The photographs are accompanied by images of archival material, including Avedon's diaries, correspondence, and contact prints. Major essays explore Avedon's penetrating incursions into the history and spirit of these tumultuous years.

Vermeer: The Complete Paintings

Walter Liedtke

Ludion, ART, HC, 9789461300416

$81.82 ex $90.00 inc

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) has been one of the most widely admired European painters since his so-called rediscovery in the second half of the nineteenth century. Until quite recently, the Romantic roots of writing on the Sphinx of Delft have encouraged the image of him as an isolated genius; the artists private life and religion, his supposed use of a camera obscura, and the fact that his teacher has not been identified have all contributed to an air of mystery. As this new monograph demonstrates, Vermeer's life is actually well documented and his work may be more appropriately understood by placing the painter in the context of the Delft school as a whole and of Delft society. The fact that one local patron acquired about twenty pictures by the artist (only thirty-six are known today) must have been significant for Vermeer's subtleties of meaning and refinements of technique and style. In the end, however, the most historical approach to Vermeer still leaves us with a master whose rare sensibility and extraordinary powers of observation may be described but not explained.

Elizabeth Peyton

Elizabeth White

Rizzoli, DESIGN, HC, 9780847839094

$136.36 ex $150.00 inc

This volume features new paintings and drawings by the American painter Elizabeth Peyton, published on the occasion of her first solo exhibition at Gagosian Gallery in Paris. More than a century later, Elizabeth Peyton’s jewel-like paintings reaffirm Manet’s belief in the quiet potency of an enduring intimiste genre. Although Peyton’s paintings infer a deep knowledge of historical artistic forbears from Goya to Warhol, this awareness is processed through an instinctual understanding of the time in which she lives. Portraits of artists both historical and contemporary are rendered from photographs or from life. Peyton imbues each likeness with a startling freshness and immediacy, although like a still life it is distanced from its subject.

The Book of Bock

Frank Hohne

Gestalten Verlag, ART, HC, 9783899554564

$61.36 ex $67.50 inc

The delight with which Frank H hne draws radiates from each of his illustrations and his strange humor is contagious. His style is idiosyncratic and sometimes childishly na*ve. H hne admits that I simply do what I want to do, but he does this so well that he has established himself as one of Germany's leading illustrators in only a short period of time. His clients include international brands such as BMW Mini, Nike, and Aveda, as well as a broad range of German newspapers and magazines. In The Book of Bock Frank H hne explains why it's so wonderful to be an illustrator. The hilarious visual journey is great fun for all readers--whether they work creatively or not. Frank H hne is inspired by the things that make him human. ( A colonoscopy gives me eight times more input than a visit to a museum for applied something or other. ) He lives happily with his wife and child in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin.

Perpetual 360 Sessions

Shaun Gladwell

Schunck Heerlen, ART, HC, 9789490624002

$33.64 ex $37.00 inc

Shaun Gladwell is an Australian video artist who has exhibited throughout Australia, the United States and Europe (including representing Australia at the 2009 Venice Biennale).

Gladwell describes his video art as "performance landscapes". Using a variety of rural and urban locations, he often uses filmic devices such as slow-motion and long pans to capture both tightly choreographed and improvised performances. The resulting works are surprisingly hypnotic, beautiful and poetic, due to their distortion of speed, reversed gravity or overall displacement of space and time.

Perpetual 360° Sessions is the catalogue from his first exhibition in the Netherlands.

How to Make a Japanese House

Chatherlijne Nuijsink

NAI Publishers, ARCHITECTURE, PB, 9789056628505

$63.64 ex $70.00 inc

Nowhere in the world have architects built homes as small as in Japan, and nowhere have they done so with such ingenuity and success. How to Make a Japanese Housepresents 21 lessons in how to design a single-family home from three decades of architectural practice. From the Western perspective, in which more space is better space, small interiors may once have seemed undesirable, but Japanese architects have long excelled at overcoming the limitations of building in densely populated areas and creating brilliant effects of spaciousness with minimal square footage. As urban areas across the world grow only more dense in population, a knack for the economic handling and design of domestic space has clearly established itself as a key virtue of contemporary architectural practice. Through a rich array of research, interviews, drawings and photographs, How to Make a Japanese Housedemonstrates that Japanese homes present a radically different way of thinking about architecture, and provide inspiration for dwelling on a smaller scale.

Marimekko: Fabrics, Fashion, Architecture

Marianne Aav

Yale Uni Press, CRAFT, PB, 9780300189339

$45.41 ex $49.95 inc

Founded in 1951 by visionary textile designer Armi Ratia and her husband, Viljo, the Marimekko Corporation in Finland not only sparked a revolution in pattern making but also pioneered a new definition of fashion that embraced the entire home environment. This book - the first comprehensive study of Marimekko designs - presents more than one hundred examples of the exuberant Marimekko fashions and home furnishings that gave the company a definitive presence on the world design stage. The book considers the history of the company from its founding through today and examines Marimekko's impact on design in Finland and around the world. The company's most important designers, including Maija Isola and Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi, their contributions, and their stylistic development are also discussed. In addition, the book examines Marimekko home and office interiors and how they reflected the lifestyle envisioned in Armi Ratia's broad, radical definition of fashion.
