A Long Walk to Freedom was begun in 1974, written clandestinely while Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island. A copy of it was discovered and confiscated by the authorities, but another copy was smuggled out of jail. When he was released in 1990, he started work on the manuscript again. His story - one of the extraordinary political lives of this century, with its narrative of struggle, imprisonment, resilience and achievement - is told in quiet and considered detail, with plenty of moments of introspection and reflection on the consequences of his actions. He devotes plenty of space to his family life, his background, his upbringing, his early political activity and his trial prior to spending 27 years in jail. His years on Robben Island are described calmly, with an emphasis on the constructive strategies he adopted, even with the most brutal warders.
