Marija Radojevic - Anthony's Story - Sunday 25th March

To be launched by Professor The Hon. Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO

Anthony’s Story is a must-read. It follows the conclusion of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in December 2017. Marija’s description of the devastating trauma she, Alex and Anthony all suffer each in their own way, following Anthony’s sexual abuse by a paedophile amongst his school staff is heartbreaking. Clear as crystal is the fact that this is a loving family who cherishes their children and who will do all to protect them. A page turner, we witness the seemingly endless attempts Marija and Alex make to retrieve their gifted son from his harrowing attempts at self-destruction. We also see Anthony’s grit. His talent for acting gets him into NIDA. Tragically this is not enough. This book is raw. Anthony’s ultimate slide into alcoholism, suicide attempts, theft and self- loathing is agonisingly exposed. Whilst the destruction of Anthony’s potential for a successful future is distressing to read Marija draws a thread of hope throughout. This book is important because institutions in which sexual abuse of children occurs must answer for their grotesque failure to protect children in their care.

Marija has with great sorrow written Anthony’s Story for all those thousands of families who, like hers, have been torn apart by a similar ‘living death’. The book also carries a strong message for the entire community which is robbed of the honourable contributions of so many young people to society.
